First Look: New Electric Tents

Big Agnes and Goal Zero have teamed up to bring solar-powered electricity to your tent with a line of Solar Ready tents. At the Big Agnes boot we saw the two new tents in person: the lightweight Krumholtz UL2 mtnGLO tent and Red Canyon 4 mtnGLO tent. The patent-pending mtnGLO lighting system uses durable LEDs to illuminate the tent interior so you can sort gear, play cards or read a book. It also features an on, off and 50% brightness mode.

In addition to a lighting ssystem, these tents will keep your gadgets powered in the backcountry via a Goal Zero Nomad 7 Solar Panel and Flip 20 Recharger. The two-person option weighed in just over five pounds packed, so this is technology most suited for car camping and relaxed canoe camping.

What’s truly unique about these two tents is the integrated weatherproof cord routing system that runs along the roof of the tent. This allows the solar panel to power electronics inside the tent while keeping out the elements and can be paired with a vareiety of electronics—for car campers or those on expedition.

While some might write off the light string as gimmicky, we think the lit interior will be a big hit with families, and especially kids. The Krumholtz and Red Canyon also come with a Goal Zero Fan for air conditioning.

If you’re already bring electronics to the campground, the Krumholtz and Red Canyon might offer the charging solution you’re looking for.
