Created in 1987, the Maine Island Trail pioneered the recreational water trails concept. By working directly with private landowners, the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) secured a 375-mile long route along the coast of Maine from Kittery Point to Quoddy Head. Today, the trail includes 217 sites, linking launch points, scenic headlands, offshore islands, historic lighthouses and campsites in protected bays.
