Are You a Nutcase?

Michael Morrow loves his brain. Yours, too. That’s why the former creative designer at Nike has built Nutcase helmets from an unknown start-up to a leading designer of lids for bicycling, skateboarding, water and snow sports.

Heading out to a Civil War football game between Oregon and Oregon State in 2000 and looking for something to symbolize the impending doom of the “Oregon Ducks,” Morrow grabbed an old black sport helmet, a handful of 4-inch screws and some rubber duckies. His creation—dead-eye duckies impaled on spikes atop the helmet—got such a rave reaction from game fans that a light bulb went off.

No stranger to understanding consumer demand for lifestyle sports and high design aesthetics, Morrow quickly realized a gap in the market: hip, funky helmets that helped their wearers express themselves… as rad, not dorky. The rest, as they say, is history. Nutcase encourages adventure sports participants of all stripes to “love their brains” and “make your mother happy…wear a helmet.” Brain buckets for water sports are available in over a dozen funky colors and designs, from Mellow Swirl and Purple Pedals to Shark Attack and Coast Guard.

Watch for a Nutcase review in the gear pages of Adventure Kayak’s May issue.
