I have two editor positions to fill by September 4th, 2013.
The jobs entail magazine and online writing and editing, some more than others. We’re growing our team so how we shuffle and fill the positions depends on who comes to us. In our perfect world, there are two positions available: Editor, and part-time assistant editor/part-time web editor.
We are a small team so I’m most interested in finding the right personality fit. Then of course we need people with the right aptitude and enthusiasm. Specifically, we need people who are very organized, self-directed and who can write well, who want to share their passion for paddling—including kayak touring, canoeing, whitewater and standup paddle boarding— and who have a really good understanding of the paddling industry. Some of this you’ll learn here, other stuff takes years of being around words and water.
We are an established paddlesports media company with four paddling magazines, a new annual paddling buyer’s guide, an even newer monthly digital paddling magazine, an international paddling film festival and a whole bunch of online media properties. We have partnerships with the American Canoe Association, Paddle Canada and Outdoor Retailer. We were the first paddling and fishing magazines, and first magazine in Canada in Apple’s Apps Store. Right now our main focus is connecting all the dots—building stronger editorial connections between magazines, online and apps. And to do so we need help.
You will be joining a tight-knit team, consisting of a publisher (that’s me, Scott) and:
- Three editors putting together Rapid, Adventure Kayak, Kayak Angler and Canoeroots magazines
- a Reel Paddling Film Festival World Tour coordinator
- a director of sales
- an advertising and sponsorship coordinator
- a marketing and social media dude
- a project manager
- a designer
- and three office staff
We are based in the beautiful Ottawa Valley; Palmer Rapids to be specific. You must be willing to live here or travel here during the week, at least until we get to know each other and are comfortable with alternative arrangements.
We’re two hundred yards from the Madawaska River, five minutes from class II-III+ rapids, less than an hour from the mighty Ottawa River, and right in the middle between Algonquin Park and Calabogie Peaks ski resort. We paddle regularly and it is not unusual for us to go swimming at lunchtime.
Drop me an email at [email protected] if you are interested in joining our team. Or, please forward this to anyone you think would be a great fit. Thanks!
