The Slate Islands are a home to Ontario’s greatest concentration of woodland caribou at the southern fringe of their range. Sightings are almost guaranteed!
The circular archipelago of more than 20 islands was created when a meteorite struck the earth billions of years ago. The shoreline presents a visual smorgasbord of geological features associated with meteor impacts including shatter-cones – cone like rock fractures created by the shock waves that reverberated following the million megaton TNT impact blast.
This trip is designed for novice to intermediate paddlers and begins at Rainbow Falls Provincial Park with basic group skills and trip orientation, dinner out and overnight. The next morning we catch a boat charter from Terrace Bay to the Slates and five days of paddling exploration.

What’s Included
Full guiding and outfitting, all paddling equipment, all meals from Monday to Friday and boat shuttles between Terrace Bay to the Slate Islands. Don’t worry about cooking or clean-up, all food preparation is taken care of by our wilderness chefs!

Please meet at Rainbow Falls Provincial Park , 1004 Hwy 17, near Rossport at 2:00 pm on your departure date. Latitude 48.847281 Longitude -87.391230 Rainbow Falls Provincial Park is approximately a 2 1/4 hours drive east from Thunder Bay or approximately a 6 hour drive west from Sault Ste. Marie. If driving from the east, we suggest starting and ending your trip with a night at Rock Island Lodge near Wawa. |
