— Press release provided by Whitewater Healing —
Ottawa Valley Family starts not for profit organization linking autism and paddling communities.
Launched to coincide with Autism Awareness Month, Whitewater Healing (www.whitewaterhealing.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to sharing whitewater experiences (canoeing, kayaking, rafting, SUP) with participants challenged by ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), modelled after the highly successful organization, Surfers Healing (www.surfershealing.org) which introduces people with autism to the sport of surfing. Whitewater Healing introduces paddlers (challenged with ASD) to whitewater ambassadors who provide them with a one on one whitewater paddling experience.
Whitewater Healing is offering three camps in 2015. One in Canada, the USA and Mexico. The Canadian camp is scheduled for the Ottawa River on August 2, 2015.
“Our goal is to link 2 of our circles of influence… the professional paddling community, of which we have been influential members for many years, and the autism community. Whitewater Healing is about providing experiences that are inclusive, fun, secure and memorable for people of all ages that are challenged by ASD,” says co-founder Jim Coffey of Davidson, Quebec.
Whitewater Healing camps are free of charge for participants and staffed by volunteer whitewater ambassadors.
