“For the three of us, water is everything,” one of the filmakers of The Search for the Perfect Day begins as crashing waves and impressive spray fill the screen. The filmakers are three kayaking friends who while spending many days paddling together noticed the common and frustrating theme of consistently finding garbage.
In 2010, they decided to take action on this impossible to ignore problem plaguing their aquatic playground by forming a Facebook page encouraging paddlers to pick up garbage. In 2012 they embarked on a multi-day kayak trip tackling 100 miles on the Columbia River from Portland to the Pacific Ocean. In their journey the filmmakers devled into deeper issues including the surprising processes that bring garbage from our curbside bins into the ocean, and how they could influence people to really care about the issue. The answer to the latter was encouraging people to connect to the natural world in order to truly care about it. The end result: a documentary focused on inspiring, passionate people with a strong attachment to the environments they love to spend time in.
“If we could inspire someone to take up kayaking, or any outdoor activity for that matter, inevitably that connection would be made.”
