About
Sophia Lauber is a journalist, canoeist and former guide based in Northern Minnesota. She joined the Paddling Magazine team in 2026, focusing on social media and digital content.
Experience
Sophia has a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame where she studied political science and journalism. As an undergrad, she wrote for the student newspaper and the ND College of Arts and Letters communications department. Her love for storytelling has continued to grow throughout her career as she’s explored different mediums. She currently works as a multimedia journalist for a local news station in Duluth, Minnesota.
Sophia’s love of the outdoors began at a young age thanks to her parents who would pack the family of seven into their minivan and drive up north to the Boundary Waters or out west to hike in the mountains. In college, Sophia began guiding at a summer camp on the edge of the Boundary Waters. For four seasons, she led groups of teenagers on multi-week trips in Minnesota and Canada, instructing on both flatwater and whitewater canoeing. These days, she enjoys whitewater paddling with friends and camping in the Boundary Waters in all seasons with her family.
Fun Fact
In addition to paddling, Sophia is an avid backpacker. During a recent summer, she spent six weeks guiding a trip in the Arctic National Wildlife Range in Alaska.
