2-Day Paddle Marathon Returns to Mexico this Spring

Bacalar Hosts the 2nd Annual Paddle Marathon

2 Days, 54 kilometers

Crystal-clear, Tropical Freshwater Paddling

May 1st through 3rd of 2015, Bacalar, Mexico, hosts the Second Annual Paddle Marathon and Festival — a 54 km paddle marathon plus a nature-oriented, adventure and cultural fair. The two-day race highlights the spectacular natural beauty of Laguna Bacalar; the Fair showcases adventure gear and the area’s adventure services operators as well as the rich history, culture and arts resources of Bacalar and Quintana Roo.

The Paddle Marathon starts with a 41 kilometer day one leg followed by a 13 km day two leg. Canoe, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and other classes of single or multi-person paddle craft are invited to participate. Registration takes place all day May 1st.

The Festival will include an exposition of adventure gear and services, on-the-water trials of equipment, cultural exhibits, demonstrations, art expositions and a two-night kayak cinema festival. All with beautiful Laguna Bacalar and Pueblo Magico Bacalar as the backdrop.

At last year’s 74 km marathon, Gustavo Escamilla Flores of Monterrey, Mexico, took first place in the Kayak/Paddle Ski category, and Raul De Lille of Cozumel, Mexico, in the SUP category. Times for the 74 km course were 8:00:39 and 12:43:48 respectively, with times of 4:33:24 and 7:33:15 on the 41 km first leg. In the kayak division were Gunnar Jentsch (2nd place, Bacalar, Mexico), Luis Fernando Amezcua (injury withdrawal day two, Mahahaul, Mexico). In the SUP division Ivan Segura (Cozumel) took 2nd place and Carlos Granados (Cozumel) took 3rd.
