Traditional Kayaking Training Camp

Qajaq Training Camp Greenland-style kayaking event returns for its 14th year to Lake Michigan, August 2015.

Since the first Qajaq Training Camp was held in August 2002, the event has been affiliated with Qajaq USA.

This is a full immersion weekend event. Located on fresh water with the advantage of a protected inland lake as well as wide open shore of Lake Michigan, there is no access by road, so start paddling! The spectacular venue creates a truly intimate atmosphere. You will be among 60 other paddlers representing a broad range of skills who want to do one thing — share and gain experience.

This year Training Camp takes place August 21 – 23, 2015. Key highlights include:

  • Friday hands-on workshop to carve your own paddle and/or construct custom flotation bags for your skin on frame, low volume kayak. (requires Thursday arrival)
  • On-water instruction including refining paddle strokes and working through a full range of self-rescue skills; instruction is available for people at all levels.
  • Coaching for ropes gymnastics, a key component of the international Greenland Qajaq Competition; everyone that attempts typically walks away with new skills.
  • Ample time for socializing with other attendees, whether it’s over morning coffee, during happy hour gatherings or by the bonfire on Lake Michigan beach.
  • And then there’s the food . . . it’s always a highlight!

The mentors are passionate about paddling and love nothing more than to share their skills with others. It’s a diverse group offering a full range of experience—expedition paddlers, ropes enthusiasts, surfers and rollers.

Food, lodging and instruction for Friday through Sunday are included as part of the $275 registration fee.

Registration opens April 1st. Visit Qajaqtc.org to learn more, or the event Facebook page for the latest news.
