Kayakers Abandon Around Ireland Record Attempt

Speed kayakers Keirron Tastagh and George Shaw have returned to land after being forced by 12 days of Force 7 headwinds and squalls to end their attempted circumnavigation of Ireland. The pair were trying for a new speed record around the island, but the hoped-for calm weather never materialized.

“We were on the water for at least 12 hours a day,” Tastagh told the Isle of Man Today. “Some days were on at 6am and off at 10pm, so those were quite long. That in itself will take it out of you.”

The duo have plans to try for the record again next summer, and continue raising funds for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
