OR Demo Day: On the Water with Hobie’s Mirage Eclipse 12

In April 2016, Hobie released the Mirage Eclipse, a standup board powered via pedals. Outdoor Retailer’s Demo Day was the first chance the Adventure Kayak team had to hop aboard the exciting innovation.

Powered by Hobie’s famous Mirage Drive, the stepping action—reminicant of a Stairmaster without any of the sweat—propelled us across the water with ease. Using the Eclipse is as easy as walking, but way more fun. Handlebars provide stability as well as rudder control—simply pull left to go left and pull right to go right.

The handlebar adjusts from 36 to 43 inches in height to accommodate riders from children to tall adults. The handlebars are removable in seconds for transport and storage. The durable molded rudder kicks up in the shallows, removes in moments, and can be locked into place to use Eclipse as a traditional standup paddleboard, which is really cool.

What we loved most about the Eclipse is its easy usability—simply step on and go. There’s no outfitting or seats to adjust or mess around with. Tracking and speed are impressive, as is the board’s bomber maneuverability. This is thanks to the board’s stable displacement design, and sleek, water-piercing bow. A square tails and flat bottom enhances stability.

Available in two sizes, we peddled the larger Eclipse 12. It’s 12 feet long and 35 inches wide, rated for 275 pounds. The hull weighs 48 pounds. The 10.5 model is 33.5 inches wide and ten and a half feet long. The capacity for the more compact model is 225 pounds. It weighs about five pounds less than the larger model. Both boards are eye-catching, constructed of glossy and tough Advanced Composite Epoxy (ACX).

A large EVA deckpad covers the expansive standing area, providing high traction cushioned footing. It extends all the way to the stern to protect the deck. There’s plenty of room for your furry best friend or to stash gear under the included cargo bungee. Additional features include a leash attachment, hull vent and stern handle.

Don’t worry about pedaling into the shallows—the fins that power the Eclipse fold against the board for beaching or use in shallow water.

The Hobie Mirage Eclipse 10.5 ($2,499) and 12 ($2,599) and is available now.
