Chocolate orange brownies are a favorite secret for canoe trippers, summer campers and guides. Using a hollowed out orange as a vessel for cooking the brownies gives this dessert an orange flavor, like the chocolate orange you find in the toe of your stocking, only better.

While the oranges can be cooked in a campfire, they can also be prepared in an oven or on the barbecue. Keep in mind that the brownie won’t cook entirely through like a tray of brownies does, but it will thicken and produce a cross between a brownie and a chocolate pudding. Expert tip: keep the fruit you collect when you hollow out the orange to top oatmeal the next morning at camp. Oh, and the messier, the better.

Campfire Orange Brownies Recipe

You will need:

  • 1 orange per person
  • Instant brownie mix
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup of oil
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • Knife
  • Spoon
  • Mixing bowl
  • Tin foil

Prepare the brownie mix.

Cut the top of the orange off and set aside. Use a knife to carve out the innards of the orange and set aside for later use. Use a spoon to carefully fill the hollowed out orange with brownie mix to a ½ inch below the lip. Put the orange lid on and wrap snugly in tin foil. Place in a fire, oven or barbecue and check periodically to see how much the brownie has cooked.
